Hockey World Cup Day 8 Highlights: Australia, Belgium move to quarterfinals

Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 Day 8 Highlights: Australia topped Group A courtesy of two wins and a draw while France stopped Argentina at a 5-5 draw. Belgium topped Group B and Germany finished second

FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2023, Day 8 Highlights

Courtesy of the last group games, the lineup for the cross-overs has been finalised. In the first cross-over, Malaysia will play Spain on 22nd January. On the same day, India will face New Zealand in a 7 pm start with both games taking place at the Kalinga International Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneshwar. 

At the same venue, the two other cross-over games will also be played on January 23rd with Argentina facing Korea and Germany facing France in the 04:30 pm and 07:00 pm IST starts respectively. 

At the end of the group stages, Australia, Belgium, Netherlands and England have emerged as Group toppers from Groups A, B, C and D respectively. They will now move straight to the quarterfinal and await their opponents who will be decided after the cross-overs.

Germany have won the game 7-2, but with no goalkeeper, Korea scored on the penalty corner and it ends at that. Belgium would top this group courtesy of a better goal difference and move straight into the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Germany will finish in second place and move to the cross-over round.

But in the end, it became difficult for them to score quick goals and as a result, it is almost not possible for them to score the three goals and they would end up playing the cross-over instead of qualifying for the quarterfinal.
