Promoted by Rajan Datar, a first-generation technocrat entrepreneur, Datar Switchgerar was incorporated on 30 Jul.'84. It went public in 1992. It manufactures switchgears, ultrasonic welding machines and capacitor panels. The products under switchgear include miniature circuit-breakers (MCB) and earth-leakage circuit-breakers (ELCB). These are used to protect the system from short-circuits, overloads, high voltages, current leakages, etc. Capacitor panels are used in rural distribution networks to improve the power factor. The company has obtained technical know-how from Felten & Guilleaume Energietechnik, Germany. It also has a technical collaboration with Stapla Ultraschall Technik, Germany, to manufacture ultrasonic welding machines. The company also entered into technical collaboration with Electronicon Kondensatoren, Germany for the manufacture of power capacitors. The company came out with a public issue (premium : Rs 85) in Oct.'94 to part-finance the expansion and technological upgradation of its facilities and the extension of its product range. Switchgear products are sold through a countrywide network of dealers. For capacitor panels, the company provides indirect financing to MSEB by way of rental arrangements. During 1996-97, new groups namely cost control, planning, engineering methods, development services and component manufacturing were formed within the organisation by the company. Company has awarded a major contract from Maharashtra State Electricty Board for manufacture, installation and commissioning of L.T. Load Management System but this contract is now in dispute & Company has invoked Arbitration Clause.
