The Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner won the toss against Punjab Kings' skipper Shikhar Dhawan and decided to bowl first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Punjab Kings did not look like the side that would win the game after the powerplay of the Delhi Capitals innings. The Capitals were 65/0 at the end of the powerplay. However, post the powerplay, Harpreet Brar started taking wickets.
He removed Phil Salt and then Rahul Chahar got Mitch Marsh. Suddenly wickets started falling at regular intervals and from 69/0 in 6.1 overs, Delhi were 88/6 in 10.1 overs. The wickets were divided between the two spinners Brar (4/30) and Chahar (2/16).
Post the fall of the top six wickets, it became very difficult for Delhi to chase down the total. With Nathan Ellis removing Pravin Dubey and Aman Khan, the formalities remained and they were completed with Delhi finishing its innings at 136/8 and losing the match by 31 runs.
Earlier in the evening, after being asked to bat first, Punjab also did not have a good start and it was a one-man show by Prabhsimran Singh that took them to 167/7 in their 20 overs. Prabhsimran scored 103 off 65 balls.
With this loss, Delhi are now officially out of the playoff race as they have only 8 points from 12 games and there are four teams already beyond 12 points, the maximum that Delhi could get from here on. Punjab with 12 points from games have now reached the sixth position in the points table. If they win their remaining two games, they still stand a chance to make it to the playoffs.
