Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday an air strike in the area of Rafah in southern Gaza that killed dozens of Palestinians was not intended to cause civilian casualties and would be investigated."In Rafah, we already evacuated about 1 million non-combatant residents and despite our utmost effort not to harm non-combatants, something unfortunately went tragically wrong," he said in a speech in parliament that was interrupted by shouting from opposition lawmakers."We are investigating the incident and will reach conclusions, because this is our policy."

The India Meteorological Department announced on Monday that  the conditions are favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala.

The Gujarat High Court slammed the Rajkot municipal body and the state government today after it emerged that two gaming zones in the city had been allowed to run for over two years without the required permits. Now we do not trust the local system and the state government," the court noted after it was informed the gaming centre in Rajkot had been constructed on unauthorised premises.

The Supreme Court  today refused to entertain a petition filed by the BJP challenging a Calcutta High Court order that had refused to interfere with a single-judge verdict restraining the party from issuing advertisements that are allegedly violative of the model code during the General Elections.


Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has moved the Supreme Court seeking extension of his interim bail by seven more days on health grounds in the alleged money laundering case linked to the excise policy scam.
The Supreme Court had on May 10 granted him interim bail for a period of 21 days to enable him to campaign for the Lok Sabha polls. Kejriwal, in his fresh plea, has sought extension of the interim bail by seven more days on health grounds, including that he has lost seven kgs.

Making a landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, cyclonic storm Remal  flooded homes and farmlands, and left a path of destruction in its wake. The Eastern and South Eastern Railways cancelled multiple trains and flight operations and flight operations were suspended for 21 hours at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, affecting 394 flights. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata also suspended its operations. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Remal has started moving northwards and is continuing to do so, gradually weakening on Monday, May 27.

The health ministry in Gaza said Israeli strikes on a centre for displaced people killed dozens in a "massacre" near Rafah on Sunday, with the Israeli army stating it had targeted Hamas operatives. Officials stated that the strikes "claimed the lives of 35 martyrs and left dozens injured, most of them children and women". Israeli army stated that  its strikes killed Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar, both officials for the Palestinian Hamas group in the occupied West Bank.

After a devastating blaze killed 27 persons including children in a TRP game zone, one of its owners and a manager were taken into custody on the charge of culpable homicide. A CCTV camera footage has emerged showing how the blaze started. It also emerged that the facility was being run without a fire NOC.
The game zone had fire safety equipment but action taken to control the fire was not sufficient, leading to the tragedy on Saturday, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

Jayakwadi dam water stock plummets to 5.19% of storage capacity after evaporation loss

The water stock in Jayakwadi dam in Marathwada region stood at mere 5.19 per cent of its capacity on Monday after recording the evaporation loss of 1.15 MCM (Million Cubic Metre) in a single day due to heat, as per the Maharashtra irrigation department.

Notably, the water storage in the dam, which provides water to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city, Jalna and industrial zones located in these two districts, stood at 39.42 per cent on May 27, 2023.

Govt cracks down on SMS scammers; blacklists 8 principal entities found spewing fraud msgs

In a major crackdown on SMS scammers, the government has blacklisted eight 'principal entities' behind SMS headers that were used for sending over 10,000 fraudulent messages over the past three months, according to an official release.

The Department of Telecom (DoT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has taken decisive action to protect citizens from potential SMS fraud through the Sanchar Saathi initiative, it said.

Cyclone Remal: Rain lash Tripura, 11 flights cancelled

Heavy rain lashed Tripura on Monday under the influence of cyclonic storm Remal while 11 flights were cancelled from Agartala airport due to bad weather, officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert in two districts Sepahijala and Gumati and an orange alert in the remaining six districts in view of the possible impact of cyclone Remal, they said.

Ukraine gets more air defence missiles from Spain to fight Russian glide bombs

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday secured from Spain a pledge of additional air defense missiles to help fight the about 3,000 bombs that he said Russia launches every month at Ukraine as the war stretches into its third year.

Above-normal heatwave days likely in northwest India, adjoining central region in June

A higher number of heatwave days were predicted in northwest India and adjoining parts of the central region in June, with a brief relief from scorching conditions in the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
 
Except for a few parts of southern peninsular India, normal to above-normal maximum temperatures are expected across the country in June, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said at a press conference.

Govt offers two discovered oil and gas fields, one coal bed methane block in special bidding round

The government has offered two discovered oil and gas fields in Mumbai offshore and a coal bed methane field in West Bengal for bidding in the latest Discovered Small Fields (DSF) bid round, regulator DGH said on Monday.

In a notice on its website, the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) said, notice inviting offer will be launched on May 28 and bids will close on July 15.
