The top court is hearing pleas seeking cross-verification of votes cast on Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) with paper slips generated through the VVPAT system.  Advocate Nizam Pasha stated a voter should be allowed to take the VVPAT slip after he votes and deposit it in a ballot box. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been imposed in Murshidabad's Rejinagar area after around 20 people were injured after stones were pelted at a Ram Navami procession from rooftops. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari wrote a letter to the West Bengal Governor seeking an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into clashes during the procession. This has led to a political slugfest between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP. While the BJP blamed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's speeches for the clashes in Rejinagar, the TMC accused the saffron party of fostering tensions ahead of the General Elections.

The Supreme Court of India will hear a petition today seeking review of its February 15 verdict, which had scrapped the Modi government's electoral bonds scheme of anonymous political funding. Filed by advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara, the review petition submitted that the top court entertained the petition against the scheme and struck down the law and the scheme without noticing that in doing so it is acting as an appellate authority over Parliament. "The court failed to notice that, if at all it is venturing into the forbidden domain of adjudicating upon a matter of legislative policy, they have a duty to hear the public at large and that the proceedings ought to be converted into representative proceedings," the plea said.

Chinese foreign minister criticizes US role in Gaza talks during visit to Indonesia

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attacked the United States for earlier blocking United Nations resolutions calling for a cease-fire in Gaza after a meeting with his counterpart in Indonesia.

The Chinese and Indonesian foreign ministers reiterated their countries' calls for an immediate and lasting cease-fire in Gaza after a meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, condemning the humanitarian costs of Israel's ongoing war against Hamas.

The US, together with Egypt and Qatar, brokered a brief cease-fire earlier in the war that included some swaps of hostages taken by Hamas and other militant groups in return for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, and has sought to bring about a new deal.

But the US vetoed a number of proposed UN Security Council cease-fire resolutions because they didn't tie the calls directly to the release of Israel hostages or condemn Hamas' attack that prompted the war before allowing a resolution to a pass with an abstention in late March.
