Supreme Court defers hearing on Kejriwal's plea for bail till Sept 5

The Supreme Court on Friday deferred till September 5 hearing on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's pleas seeking bail and challenging the arrest by the CBI in the alleged excise policy scam. A bench of justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan allowed the CBI to file its counter affidavit in the matter and gave two days' time to Kejriwal to file a rejoinder. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, said the CBI filed a counter affidavit in only one of the pleas and it was served upon them at 8 pm on Thursday. ASG SV Raju said they will file the counter in another plea in one week. The bench then posted the matter for further hearing on September 5. On August 14, the top court refused to grant interim bail to Kejriwal in the case and sought a response from the probe agency on his plea challenging his arrest. NCPCR rescues 58 child labourers from distillery in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen

As many as 39 boys and 19 girls were rescued from a distillery in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district, an official said on Sunday. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) with the Association of Voluntary Action, also known as Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), led the crackdown at Som Distillery on Saturday, a release stated. A team led by NCPCR chairman Priyank Kanoongo rescued 58 children, 19 girls and 39 boys, from Som Distillery, the BBA stated. "Children bore burn wounds on their hands from exposure to harsh chemicals and alcohol. They were transported daily by their employer in a school bus and worked 12-14 hours daily," it said. In a post on 'X', Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the raid at the factory was a serious matter. "Received detailed information from the labour, excise and police departments, and direction has been given for taking appropriate action. Bihar's alcohol ban in 2016 prevented 24 lakh cases of daily and weekly consumption, and 21 lakh cases of intimate partner violence, according to new research published in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia journal. The ban is also estimated to have prevented 18 lakh men in the state from becoming overweight or obese, it said. Allied Blenders and Distillers Ltd, the maker of Officer's Choice Whisky, has received Sebi's go-ahead to raise Rs 1,500 crore through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), an update with the markets regulator showed on Tuesday. The initial share sale comprises fresh issuance of equity shares worth Rs 1,000 crore and an Offer-for-Sale (OFS) of shares to the tune of Rs 500 crore by promoters, according to the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP). As a part of the OFS, Bina Kishore Chhabria, Resham Chhabria Jeetendra Hemdev and Neesha Kishore Chhabria will sell shares. Allied Blenders and Distillers Ltd, which filed preliminary IPO papers with Sebi in January, obtained its observations on May 10, the update showed. Wine producer Sula Vineyards Ltd on Wednesday reported a 4.85 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 13.55 crore in the fourth quarter ended March 2024. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 14.24 crore in the same quarter a year ago, Sula Vineyards said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations during the quarter under review stood at Rs 131.7 crore as against Rs 120 crore in the year-ago period, it added. Total expenses in the fourth quarter were higher at Rs 116.83 crore compared to Rs 100.83 crore in the corresponding period previous year, the company said. Asserting its right to regulate industrial alcohol, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Thursday that legislative power to levy excise duty on alcohol not fit for human consumption but meant for industrial use lies exclusively with Parliament. Arguing before a nine-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Attorney General R Venkataramani submitted that a "conscious decision" was taken to treat alcoholic liquors fit for human consumption and alcoholic liquors not fit for human consumption separately, with the former falling within the domain of provincial legislatures and the latter within the ambit of the federal legislature.
