Several activists expected in Chicago DNC to call for Gaza ceasefire

Thousands of activists are expected to converge on Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention, hoping to call attention to abortion rights, economic injustice and the war in Gaza. While Vice President Kamala Harris has energised crowds of supporters as she prepares to accept the Democratic nomination, progressive activists maintain their mission remains the same. Activists say they learned lessons from last month's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and are predicting bigger crowds and more robust demonstrations in Chicago, a city with deep social activism roots. Who is protesting? Demonstrations are expected every day of the convention and, while their agendas vary, many activists agree an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war is the priority. Things kicked off Sunday on the convention's eve with an abortion rights march along iconic Michigan Avenue. Organiser Linda Loew said even though Democrats have pushed to safeguard reproductive rights at home,

Early blast of heat & humidity leaves millions sweltering across US

A blast of heat and humidity in the Midwest and Northeast days before the official start of summer put a wet blanket on outdoor activities from festivals to sports camps as officials urged people to take precautions. Cities that opened cooling centers this week advised that Wednesday's Juneteenth holiday means some public libraries, senior centers and pools where residents could beat the heat will be closed. The dangerous temperatures were expected to peak in the eastern Great Lakes and New England on Wednesday and Thursday, and in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic on Friday and Saturday, the National Weather Service said. Heat index readings were expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees (37.7 C to 40.5 C) in many locations. People and even zoo animals were forced to find ways to thwart the muggy weather. An organization that provides produce to areas with limited access to fresh food in Columbus, Ohio, prepared frozen towels and packed cold water for their workers. Hydration is the ke

Trump risks $100 mn tax bill if IRS audit on Chicago tower dispute lost

Former US president Donald Trump may face an IRS bill in excess of $100 million after a government audit indicates he double-dipped on tax losses tied to a Chicago skyscraper, according to a report by The New York Times and ProPublica that drew on a yearslong audit and public filings. The report's findings could put renewed focus on Trump's business career as the presumptive Republican nominee tries to regain the White House after losing in 2020. Trump used his cachet as a real estate developer and TV star to build a political movement, yet he has refused to release his tax filings as past presidential candidates have. The tax filings that the public does know about have come from past reporting by the Times and a public release of records by Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee in 2022. Trump's presidential campaign provided a statement in son Eric Trump's name saying the IRS inquiry was settled years ago, only to be brought back to life once my father ran for office. We

Eleven people standing outside a family gathering on Saturday night were shot including a young girl who was killed in what Chicago police believe was gang-related violence on the city's South Side, police said on Sunday. Four victims were children. An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head and died, while a 1-year-old boy and a 8-year-old boy were each shot multiple times and listed in critical condition. Ground collision of two Boeing planes in Chicago sparks FAA investigation

A plane taxiing for departure clipped another aircraft at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Sunday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday. No injuries were reported, both planes were of Boeing design, and the FAA says it will investigate the incident. The left wing tip of Flight 11 from All Nippon Airways, a Japanese airline, struck the rear of Delta Air Lines Flight 2122 on Sunday around 6.30 pm Central Time, FAA spokesperson Tony Molinaro said. The All Nippon Airways flight was a Boeing 777, and the Delta Airlines aircraft was a Boeing 717. American aircraft manufacturer Boeing faces increasing scrutiny following a series of mechanical failures and subsequent grounding of its Boeing 737 Max 9 model after an emergency exit door failed and caused an emergency landing last week. It was not immediately clear what caused the incident on Sunday and whether it was related to a manufacturing flaw. Boeing representatives did not provide a comment on Monday ...

Chicago commuter train crashes into rail equipment, 40 injured: Officials

A Chicago commuter train collided with rail equipment on Thursday morning, injuring nearly 40 people, some of them critically, fire officials said. The Chicago Fire Department said the Chicago Transit Authority train crashed into snow-removal equipment just before 10.35 am on the city's North Side near the Howard CTA station. The Yellow Line train carrying 31 commuters and seven CTA workers was southbound from Skokie when it collided with the slower-moving rail equipment, said Robert Jurewicz, the Chicago Fire Department's second district chief. Thirty-eight people, including four children, were injured. Twenty-three were taken to area hospitals and three of those injured were in critical condition, although no one suffered life-threatening injuries, said Keith Gray, assistant deputy chief paramedic. The train's operator was among the most seriously hurt, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The children suffered bumps and bruises, the newspaper reported. He said the 15 others who were

Chicago keeps hundreds of migrants at airports while waiting on shelters

Hidden behind a heavy black curtain in one of the nation's busiest airports is Chicago's unsettling response to a growing population of asylum-seekers arriving by plane. Hundreds of migrants, from babies to the elderly, live inside a shuttle bus centre at O'Hare International Airport's Terminal 1. They sleep on cardboard pads on the floor and share airport bathrooms. A private firm monitors their movements. Like New York and other cities, Chicago has struggled to house asylum-seekers, slowly moving people out of temporary spaces and into shelters and, in the near future, tents. But Chicago's use of airports is unusual, having been rejected elsewhere, and highlights the city's haphazard response to the crisis. The practice also has raised concerns about safety and the treatment of people fleeing violence and poverty. It was supposed to be a stop-and-go place, said Vianney Marzullo, one of the few volunteers at O'Hare. It's very concerning. It is not just a safety matter, but a pub

New Orleans restaurant shooting kills waiter, wounds Chicago tourist

A shooting outside a well-known New Orleans restaurant on Friday killed an employee, and one bullet penetrated the restaurant and wounded a Chicago tourist visiting for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Interim New Orleans police Superintendent Michelle Woodfork told reporters on Saturday that the shooting happened outside Mandina's Restaurant in New Orleans' Mid-City neighbourhood. No suspects have yet been named. Woodfork said police believe two assailants targeted the waiter, whom family members identified to The Times-Picayune of New Orleans as 23-year-old Hilbert Walker III. A private security guard returned fire, Woodfork said, and was not injured. Diners told local news outlets that they dived to the floor seeking cover and that police didn't let them leave for more than an hour. The 54-year-old Chicago woman was visiting for Jazz Fest and was at Mandina's to celebrate the birthday of a friend, when she was shot, Woodfork said. She did not say what condition the ..

Two killed, 8 hospitalised in fiery, wrong-way Chicago multi-car crash

A speeding driver in a stolen car went the wrong way down a Chicago street and caused a fiery, multi-car wreck in which two people were killed and at least eight others hospitalised Wednesday night, police said. Both people inside the speeding Dodge Charger were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the South Side Chicago neighbourhood of Chatham, Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters. Six adults and two children, a 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were hospitalised as a result of injuries from the wreck, police said Thursday morning. All were listed in either fair or good condition. Brown said the Charger had been reported stolen earlier in the day and authorities found a gun in the car. Officials did not immediately identify the two people who died inside the Charger. This is a really bad crash, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford said, according to WLS-TV. I've seen many, many and this is among the worst.
