Coal India likely to report production of around 773.7 MT in FY24

Coal India Ltd is likely to report production of around 773.7 million tonnes (MT) for the 2023-24 fiscal, which will be close to a 10-per cent growth over last year, company sources said. However, it is expected to fall short of the target of 780 million tonnes. Coal offtake is expected to stay restricted to 753 million tonnes, nearly 90 per cent of the target of 780 million tonnes, they said. The miner will announce its production and offtake numbers later on Monday. The company's dry fuel supplies to thermal power plants touched the 610.8-million tonne mark on Wednesday, surpassing the target for this sector. Coal India Chairman P M Prasad in a recent investor concall projected a shortfall in the wake of some land-related production hurdle in South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. Coal India plans to begin mining of critical minerals, including lithium

State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) is mulling entering into the mining of critical minerals, including lithium, an official said. CIL plans to get a block from the government for exploration and once lithium reserves are proved, the PSU would go for mining, the official said. Lithium is the 'cosmic' mineral which is needed as part of the country's energy security plans. It is being seen as a game-changer mineral to achieve the Net Zero goals in the coming years. "We will take one block from Government of India and do exploration and once lithium is proved then we can go for mining," Coal India Director (Technical) B Veera Reddy told reporters here. Coal production rises over 12% to 664.37 MT this fiscal: Ministry

The country's coal production increased 12.29 per cent to 664.37 Million Tonnes (MT) from April to December 25 this fiscal over the year-ago period, according to an official statement. The country's coal output was 591.64 MT in the same period last year. "As per the latest statistics of the Ministry of Coal, the cumulative achievement in coal production during FY 202324, from April 2023 to December 25, 2023, has touched 664.37 MT, indicating a substantial 12.29 per cent growth compared to the corresponding period last year at 591.64 MT," according to an official statement. The coal dispatch from April to December 25 increased to 692.84 MT over 622.40 MT in the year-ago period. The increase ensures a consistent and robust coal supply to meet the energy needs of the power sector, the coal ministry said. Govt earmarks Rs 937 cr for exploration of non-CIL blocks in FY'20

The government has allocated Rs 937 crore for exploration of mines that are not associated with Coal India, for the ongoing financial year, Parliament was informed on Monday. Of this fund, Rs 120 crore has been earmarked for regional exploration and Rs 817 crore for detailed drilling, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. "The government has allocated funds of Rs 937 crore...in the current financial year 2019-20 for carrying out exploration in non-CIL (Coal India) blocks in coal and lignite," he said. Regional exploration has been planned for 37 coal blocks and 10 lignite blocks whereas detailed drilling has been planned for 121 coal blocks and one lignite block, Joshi said adding that such exploration programme is approved every year.
