Cybersecurity is more than protecting personal data: Isro chief Somnath

In this era, when infrastructure built over the years is vulnerable to cyber attacks, it is very important to build an ecosystem to develop cyber security tools and solutions, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman S Somanath said on Thursday. He laid the foundation stone for 'Cyber Nalanda', a state-of-the-art cyber security research and development centre, the brainchild of SISA, a global forensics-driven cybersecurity solutions company, that is coming up in Bengaluru. "I was from a generation of engineers who started their career without knowing computers. The transitioning from that time to now has been tremendous," said Somanath. According to him, at one point, security was nothing but anti-virus. "But now, as applications are expanding, threats are also expanding. Cyber security threat is not limited to theft of personal data alone. It is now at a much greater scale -- it is also to do with the security of the nation itself," said Somanath. He pointed out that the vario

How lessons learned from 2016 campaign led US to be open about Iran hack

The 2016 presidential campaign was entering its final months and seemingly all of Washington was abuzz with talk about how Russian hackers had penetrated the email accounts of Democrats, triggering the release of internal communications that seemed designed to boost Donald Trump's campaign and hurt Hillary Clinton's. Yet there was a notable exception: The officials investigating the hacks were silent. When they finally issued a statement, one month before the election, it was just three paragraphs and did little more than confirm what had been publicly suspected that there had been a brazen Russian effort to interfere in the vote. This year, there was another foreign hack, but the response was decidedly different. US security officials acted more swiftly to name the culprit, detailing their findings and blaming a foreign adversary this time, Iran just over a week after Trump's campaign revealed the attack. They accused Iranian hackers of targeting the presidential campaigns of b

Apparent cyberattack leaves Seattle airport facing internet outages

An apparent cyberattack disrupted internet, phones, email and other systems at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for a third day on Monday as Port of Seattle officials worked to investigate the outages and restore full service. We're working around the clock to get necessary systems back online and to mitigate impacts to our passengers, the airport's aviation managing director Lance Lyttle said in a press conference Sunday. Lyttle said the airport is investigating with the help of outside experts and is working closely with federal partners, including the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection. Officials have not released details about the full scope of the outage, but Lyttle said it was not affecting TSA's ability to screen passengers. Some airlines, including Delta and Alaska Airlines, reported no service interruptions from the outage. Both of the airlines use Sea-Tac as a hub. Still, the outage did affect the Port of Seattle's baggage sorting

Russia-linked cybercampaigns target France, focus on Olympics and elections

Photos of blood-red hands on a Holocaust memorial. Caskets at the Eiffel Tower. A fake French military recruitment drive calling for soldiers in Ukraine, and major French news sites improbably registered in an obscure Pacific territory, population 15,000. All are part of disinformation campaigns orchestrated out of Russia and targeting France, according to French officials and cybersecurity experts in Europe and the United States. France's legislative elections and the Paris Olympics sent them into overdrive. More than a dozen reports issued in the past year point to an intensifying effort from Russia to undermine France, particularly the upcoming Games, and President Emmanuel Macron, who is one of Ukraine's most vocal supporters in Europe. The Russian campaigns sowing anti-French disinformation began online early last summer but first became tangible in October 2023 when more than 1,000 bots linked to Russia relayed photos of graffitied Stars of David in Paris and its suburbs. Cloud resources biggest targets for cyberattacks in India, shows study

A study by a multinational firm has identified cloud resources as the "biggest targets" for cyberattacks in India. Thales has announced the release of the 2024 Thales Cloud Security Study, its annual assessment of the latest cloud security threats, trends and emerging risks based on a survey of nearly 3,000 IT and security professionals across 18 countries in 37 industries, according to a statement. "The study was based on a global survey of 2,961 respondents, aimed at professionals in security and IT management," it said. The study "identifies cloud resources as the biggest targets for cyberattacks in India". Cloud security spending now "tops all other security spending categories", it added. In India, nearly half (46 per cent) of the respondents reported that all corporate data stored in the cloud is sensitive and 37 per cent of the participating organisations have experienced a cloud data breach in India with 14 per cent having had one in the past year, the statement said. Cyberattack compromised data centre; won't pay $8 mn ransom: Indonesia

Indonesia's national data centre has been compromised by a hacking group asking for a $8 million ransom that the government won't pay, authorities said Monday. The cyberattack has disrupted services of more than 200 government agencies at both the national and regional levels since June 20, said Samuel Abrijani Pangerapan, the director general of informatics applications with the Communications and Informatics Ministry. Some government services have returned immigration services at airports and elsewhere are now functional but efforts continue at restoring other services such as investment licensing, Pangerapan told reporters. The attackers have held data hostage and offered a key for access in return for the $8 million ransom, said PT Telkom Indonesia's director of network & IT solutions, Herlan Wijanarko, without giving further details. Wijanarko said the company, in collaboration with authorities at home and abroad, is investigating and trying to break the encryption that ...

Japan's space agency hit by cyberattacks, no sensitive data compromised

Japan's space agency has suffered a series of cyberattacks since last year, but sensitive information related to rockets and satellites was not affected and it is continuing to investigate and take preventive measures, officials said Friday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi acknowledged that the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, has had "a number of" cyberattacks since late last year. JAXA has investigated the extent of illegal access while shutting down the affected networks and verifying that they did not contain classified information about operations of rockets and satellites and national security, he said. Hayashi vowed to strengthen Japan's ability to counter cyberattacks. Japan has been accelerating a military buildup in response to China's growing military might and is hoping to be able to develop a counterstrike ability, but experts say Tokyo will continue to need to rely heavily on the United States for launching long-range cruise missiles at ...
