Lupin gets USFDA approval to market generic medication to treat diabetes

Drug firm Lupin on Thursday said it has received approval from the US health regulator to market a generic medication to treat diabetes. The company has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its abbreviated new drug application for Dapagliflozin and Saxagliptin tablets, the Mumbai-based drug maker said in a regulatory filing. The company's product is a generic equivalent of AstraZeneca AB's Qtern tablets, it added. This generic product will be manufactured at its Pithampur facility, the company said. Dapagliflozin and Saxagliptin tablets are indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. As per IQVIA data, Dapagliflozin and Saxagliptin tablets had estimated annual sales of USD 5 million in the US market.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals launches antidiabetic drug 'Lirafit' in India

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals on Wednesday said it has launched a biosimilar of the popular antidiabetic drug, Liraglutide in India. The drug is being marketed under the brand name Lirafit following the approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), the company said in a statement. It is priced at around Rs 100 for a standard dose of 1.2mg (per day) and will lower the cost of therapy by approximately 70 per cent, the company claimed. Lirafit will be available only under prescription. "Clinical trials have shown that it helps improve glycemic control in adult type 2 diabetes mellitus patients along with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) and obesity," Glenmark Pharmaceuticals President and Business Head India Formulations, Alok Malik said. Liraglutide has also proven to have a positive impact on cardiac and renal safety outcomes among patients in clinical trials, making it an effective choice of treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, he added. USFDA approves new version of diabetes drug Mounjaro for weight loss

A new version of the popular diabetes treatment Mounjaro can be sold as a weight-loss drug, US regulators announced on Wednesday. The US Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly's Zepbound, or tirzepatide. The drug helped dieters lose about a quarter of their body weight, or 60 pounds (27 kilograms), in a recent study. Zepbound is the latest diabetes drug approved for weight loss, joining Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, a high-dose version of its diabetes treatment Ozempic. The FDA approved Lilly's drug for people who are considered obese, with a body mass index of 30 or higher, or those who are overweight with a related health condition, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. Cipla inks licensing pact with Novartis to manufacture, mkt diabetes drug

Drug major Cipla on Monday said it has inked a licensing pact with Novartis Pharma AG to manufacture and market Galvus range, used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, from January 1, 2026. The Mumbai-based company has signed a perpetual license agreement with Novartis Pharma AG (Switzerland) to manufacture and market Galvus and Galvus combination brands, it said in a regulatory filing. "This deal is expected to further bolster Cipla's position in India as one of the top players in the diabetes category," it added. The agreement is subject to satisfaction of certain conditions precedent, the drug firm said. Galvus is one of the leading brands in the Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP4) space and amongst the prominent brands in the oral diabetic medication category, the drug firm stated. On Monday, shares of Cipla ended 1.02 per cent up at Rs 901.85 apiece on the BSE.

Glenmark Pharma launches combination drug for Type 2 diabetic patients

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd on Wednesday said it has launched triple fixed-dose combination Teneligliptin with Pioglitazone and Metformin in India for diabetic patients. This fixed-dose combination offers patients with Type 2 diabetes the convenience of once daily dosing to improve their glycemic control. It is priced at Rs 14.90 per day, thereby reducing the daily cost of therapy by 40 per cent, making it more affordable to the masses, the company said in a statement. It has been launched under the brand name Zita-PioMet, and contains Teneligliptin (20 mg), Pioglitazone (15 mg) and Metformin (500mg/1000mg) in a sustained release (SR) formulation, it added. "Type 2 diabetes patients in India often face issues of beta cell dysfunction along with insulin resistance. AstraZeneca India gets regulator's approval to market anti-diabetes drug

Drug firm AstraZeneca India on Tuesday said it has received approval from the country's drug regulator to market anti-diabetes medication Dapagliflozin. The company said it has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDCSCO) for the drug indicated for diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dapagliflozin is the first and only anti-diabetic drug approved to significantly reduce the risk of sustained eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate), cardiovascular deaths and hospitalisations due to heart failure in adults with progressive chronic kidney disease, the drug firm said. The approval is applicable for both diabetic and non-diabetic CKD patients, it added. CKD is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation globally and in India, representing a significant clinical and economic burden. "The timely approval of Dapagliflozin from the CDCSCO committee with the additional indication is a huge boost for nephrologists across the country .
