The West Bengal transport department has decided to streamline the registration of e-rickshaws and phase out unregistered and illegally manufactured vehicles. The decision was taken in view of representations from various bodies about the plying of lakhs of unregistered e-rickshaws built in workshops without following any standard manufacturing procedures or safety guidelines. A senior transport department official said that district magistrates have been asked to identify battery-operated unregistered e-rickshaws built clandestinely at local garages and phase them out in a time-bound manner. Transport Secretary Saumitra Mohan, in a notice issued on September 12, said, "Representations have been received from different stakeholders in connection with non-compliance of guidelines for registration of e-rickshaws, duly manufactured by different companies including original equipment manufacturers, after obtaining the approval from the competent authority." State-owned Coal India Ltd aims to take the total number of e-vehicles at its mines to 681 by FY2025-26 from 178 at present, the government said on Wednesday. Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi in a written reply to the Lok Sabha said that Coal India Ltd is asserting on hiring electric vehicles at different mines and subsidiary headquarters. The present number of e-vehicles in Coal India Limited is 178, he said. The total target for e-vehicles in FY26 is 681, the minister said. Coal India Limited has taken various initiatives for reduction of carbon emission in mining operations which includes deployment of e-vehicles in all its subsidiary companies, he said. CIL accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output.

As many as 400 vehicles were gutted in a fire at a two-wheeler showroom here early on Thursday morning, a police official said. The fire broke out around 5 am at the showroom located near the national highway (NH-16) and raged for about 90 minutes, the police official added. "The fire accident occurred when new vehicles were being unloaded from a truck which came from Chennai," Vijayawada Central ACP P Bhaskar Rao said and added that the loss could be around Rs 4 crore, as per preliminary estimates. Five fire engines were deployed to douse the blaze as a result of which as many as 200 vehicles could be saved, he sad. No police complaint has been lodged yet, he added. Electric passenger vehicles retail sales declined by 10.51 per cent sequentially to 3,346 units in January 2023 over 3,739 vehicles sold in December last year, according to automobiles body FADA. Tata Motors's electric PV sales were down 17 per cent at 2,426 vehicles in January as against 2,926 units delivered in December 2022. MG Motor sales volume also dropped 12.55 per cent to 425 units against 486 units sold in the month earlier. BYD India reported 164 per cent growth in ePV volumes at 132 vehicles in January 2023 as compared to 50 vehicles retailed in December last year while BMW India sales stood 123 cars against 29 units in December 2022, according to FADA.
