Employees drawing substantial salaries and having rent-free accommodation provided by their employers will now be able to save more and get a higher take-home salary as the income tax department has revised norms for valuing such perquisites.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on August 18 notified amendments to the Income Tax Rules for valuing perquisites of rent-free or concessional accommodation by employers to employees. The rules will come into effect from September 1.
The Finance Act, 2023, had brought in an amendment for the purposes of calculation of 'perquisite' with regard to the value of rent-free or concessional accommodation provided to an employee, by his employer. The rules for calculating perquisites have been notified now.
"The categorisation and the limits of cities and population have now been based on the 2011 census as against the 2001 census earlier," the income tax department said in a statement on Saturday.

The Law Commission has recommended rolling out registration of e-FIRs in a phased manner beginning with offences bearing up to three years jail term.
In a report submitted to the government earlier this week and made public on Friday, the law panel proposed setting up a centralised national portal to facilitate registration of e-FIRs.
It said e-FIRs will tackle long persisting issue of delay in the registration of FIRs and allow citizens to report crimes in real time.
In his letter to Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Law Commission Chairman Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi said, "Due to the march of technology, means of communication have progressed in leaps and bounds. In such a landscape, clinging on to an archaic system of registering FIRs does not augur well  for criminal reforms.

Multi-sector investment firm IQuest Enterprises will acquire the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) business of Viatris in India for an undisclosed amount.
The investment firm has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the API operations of global pharmaceutical major Viatris in India, IQuest Enterprises said in a statement on Monday.
IQuest emerged as the preferred investor following a global competitive bid, it added.
As part of the deal, the company will acquire six API manufacturing facilities, three each in Vizag and Hyderabad, an R&D facility in Hyderabad, and third-party API sales.

Vedanta group firm Hindustan Zinc Ltd on Monday said its production of mined metal dropped marginally by one per cent to 2,52,000 tonnes in the second quarter of the ongoing fiscal.
Hindustan Zinc Ltd's (HZL) mined metal production was 2,55,000 tonnes in the second quarter of the previous fiscal.
"Mined metal production in the second quarter at 252kt, marginally down YoY and two per cent down sequentially mainly due to lower ore production at Rampura Agucha & Kayad mine partly offset by better overall metal grades," HZL said in a filing to BSE.
The company's refined metal output in the second quarter at 2,41,000 tonnes, dropped by two per cent over the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal.
"Integrated zinc production at 185kt, down 2 per cent as compared to 2QFY23 and down 12 per cent sequentially.

A passenger was arrested for allegedly attempting to open the emergency exit door of an Indigo flight from Nagpur to Bengaluru prior to take-off, police said on Monday.
The man identified as Swapnil Holey had boarded Bengaluru-bound Indigo flight 6E 6803 from Nagpur at around 10 pm on September 30, they said.
According to police, the passenger was seated next to the emergency exit door of the aircraft. Before takeoff, while the crew members were briefing passengers, the man allegedly attempted to open the door.
After the flight landed at the Kempegowda International Airport here at 11.55 pm, Holey was escorted by the airline's staff to the police station, a senior police officer said.
He was scheduled to take a flight to Bangkok on October 1, police said.
Based on the complaint filed by the airline staff, an FIR under section 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code was registered and the accused passenger was arrested in connection with the

The incidents of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) have declined by 52 per cent in Chhattisgarh in the last five years and 589 villages have been freed from clutches of the menace, the state government said on Monday.
The Chhattisgarh government's statement came a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar district, one of the seven districts in the Naxal-affected Bastar division.
The release said the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has been working with the idea of 'Gadhbo Nava Chhattisgarh' (creating a new Chhattisgarh) and marching ahead with a three-pronged strategy of trust, security and development.
