US may respond to consequences for China due to tech export curbs: Yellen

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday said she agreed Washington will listen to Chinese complaints about security-related curbs on US technology exports and might respond to unintended consequences as she ended a visit to Beijing aimed at reviving strained relations. Yellen defended targeted measures" on trade that China's leaders complain are aimed at hurting its fledgling tech industries. She said the Biden administration wants to avoid unnecessary repercussions" but gave no indication of possible changes. Relations between the two biggest economies are at their lowest level in decades due to disputes about technology, security and other irritants. A key Chinese complaint is limits on access to processor chips and other US technology on security grounds that threaten to hamper the ruling Communist Party's development of smartphones, artificial intelligence and other industries. We will open up channels so that they can express concerns about our actions, and we can explain a

Indian maths, science teachers in demand in England: UK Media report

India is among the source countries for qualified mathematics and science teachers being lured with international relocation payments of GBP 10,000 as part of an overseas drive to fill classroom vacancies in England, according to a UK media report on Saturday. Hundreds of maths, science and language teachers will be brought to the UK from countries such as India and Nigeria this year, with plans to expand recruitment schemes to other countries and subjects, The Times' newspaper said. The International Relocation Payments (IRP), being run as a pilot in the 2023 to 2024 academic year, is applicable to overseas teachers with a job offer in the UK and covers their cost of visas, immigration health surcharge and other relocation expenses. UK officials reportedly expect between 300 and 400 teachers to get the IRPs in the coming academic year and if it proves a success in attracting overseas staff, the scheme could be extended to other subjects. In an effort to boost the number of teacher

UN commission calls for efforts to close the gender digital divide

The U.N.'s premiere global body fighting for gender equality on Saturday called for wide-ranging efforts to close the gap between men and women in today's technology-driven world and urged zero tolerance for gender-based violence and harassment online. In a document approved by consensus after all-night negotiations at the end of a two-week meeting, the Commission on the Status of Women expressed grave concern at the interrelation between offline and online violence, harassment and discrimination against women and girls and it condemned the increase in these acts. It called for a significant increase in investments by the public and private sectors to bridge the gender digital divide. It also called for the removal of barriers to equal access to digital technology for all women and girls, and new policies and programs to achieve gender parity in emerging scientific and technological fields. Sima Bahous, executive director of UN Women, an entity of the United Nations focusing on ...

Scientists split seawater without pre-treatment to produce green hydrogen

Researchers have successfully split seawater without pre-treatment to produce green hydrogen. According to the international study, the researchers split natural seawater into oxygen and hydrogen with nearly 100 per cent efficiency, to produce green hydrogen by electrolysis. They used a non-precious and cheap catalyst in a commercial electrolyser, the study said. A typical non-precious catalyst is cobalt oxide with chromium oxide on its surface. "We used seawater as a feedstock without the need for any pre-treatment processes like reverse osmosis desolation, purification, or alkalisation," said Yao Zheng, lead researcher from University of Adelaide, Australia. "The performance of a commercial electrolyser with our catalysts running in seawater is close to the performance of platinum/iridium catalysts running in a feedstock of highly purified deionised water," said Zheng. The team published their research in the journal Nature Energy. "Current electrolysers are operated with high
