Describing the indigenous construction of an advanced stealth frigate for the Indian navy, 'Vindhyagiri' by Kolkata's Garden Reach Shipyards as a symbol of India's self-reliance in shipbuilding, President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday launched the ship at the dock on the banks of the river Hooghly here.
She also said that the production of the advanced frigate was a symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat and of technological advancement made by the country.
"The launch is a symbol of self reliance in ship building," the President said, adding that projects like these reflect India's "commitment to self reliance and technological advancement".
"I am very happy to be here at the launch of Vindhyagiri. This event also marks a move forward in enhancing India's maritime capabilities," the President said.

Upsides higher on Cochin Shipyards and Garden Reach Shipbuilders than Mazagon

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday handed over a catamaran built by a private shipyard here to the Maldives government.
The 30-metre long vessel named "Thinaaveshi", built by Vijai Marine Services, was handed over to representatives of the Maldives government at a function here.
This is the largest catamaran vessel built in India, Sawant claimed.
"Handing over of this vessel to the ministry of environment, climate change and technology of Maldives indicates the strength of the 'Make in India' initiative," the chief minister said.
Goa's shipping industry has been contributing to this sector since 1961. Sawant said, adding that handing over the catamaran to the Maldives government is a proud moment for the state.
Representatives from the Maldives government will take the vessel to their country on Tuesday.
The ship can travel up to 100 nautical miles in the sea and will be used for monitoring and research, a senior Vijai Marine Services official said.

In a small but significant move, India and the US have decided to explore the possibilities of Indian shipyards not only maintaining but also repairing American navy ships.
This is expected to not only further boost the India-US defence trade, but also bring additional business to the Indian shipyards.
The decision was taken during the India-US 2+2 ministerial that was held here on Monday.

The four-month monsoon season has ended with India receiving "normal" rainfall -- 820 mm against a long-period average of 868.6 mm -- with positive factors countering the effect of El Nino conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.
Rainfall between 94 per cent and 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) is considered normal.
However, normal cumulative rainfall over the country during the monsoon season doesn't mean even spatial and temporal spread of precipitation.
The Indian monsoon refers to inherent fluctuations and changes that occur over time due to various natural factors. This is called natural variability.
Research, however, shows climate change is making the monsoon more variable. Increased variability means more extreme weather and dry spells.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said with positive factors countering the effect of El Nino, the 2023 monsoon ended with 94.4 per cent cumulative rainfall, which is considered "normal".
