India presents different picture than 10 years ago, says VP Dhankhar

With foreign exchange reserves worth USD 680 billion, India has come a long a way since the time it had to pledge its gold to tide over a financial crisis, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Saturday. Dhankhar was speaking during the inauguration programme of Uttar Pradesh Sainik School in Gorakhpur. "Today's India presents a completely different picture than what was 10 years ago. There was a time when the same country, which was referred to as 'sone ki chidiya', had to pledge its gold in foreign banks. Back then, our foreign exchange was between USD 1 billion and USD 2 billion. Today, it is USD 680 billion. Look at the kind of progress we have made since," he said. India's foreign exchange reserves jumped by USD 2.299 billion to a new high of USD 683.987 billion for the week ended on August 30. The vice-president also showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India's turnaround and said Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also played a crucial role i

Stop bulldozer politics, rein in wild animals: Mayawati to CM Yogi

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Thursday asked the Yogi Adityanath government to stop doing "bulldozer politics" and make a strategy to deal with wild animals straying into the human habitat and attacking people. "In some districts of UP, wild animals are attacking children, elderly and youngsters. Government should take necessary steps to stop this because labourers and poor people are not able to arrange fodder for their animals... the government should make a strategy to deal with wild animals," she said. Mayawati also asked the government and the Samajwadi Party to leave the "bulldozer politics" to the Supreme Court "where there is full hope of getting justice." A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan had on Monday remarked, "How can anybody's house be demolished only because he is an accused? Even if he is a convict, still it can't be done without following the procedure as prescribed by law." The observation sparked off an acrimonious exchange between Chief

Adityanath made the remark responding to the Samajwadi Party chief's Tuesday comment on bulldozer, the machine which has become emblematic of his style of governance. "As soon as the Samajwadi government is formed in 2027, the bulldozers of the entire state will head towards Gorakhpur," Yadav had said. Adityanath said only those with a "bulldozer-like capability" can operate it. "Today these people have come back in a new form to mislead the public. Not everyone's hands can fit on a bulldozer. It requires both heart and mind. Only someone who has a bulldozer-like capability and determination can operate it. Those who grovel before the rioters will not be able to stand in front of a bulldozer," he said while addressing an

BJP govt wants to delay recruitment of assistant teachers: Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday claimed that the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh wanted to drag the issue of recruitment of assistant teachers. It set aside the selection lists issued in June 2020 and January 2022, which included 6,800 candidates of the reserved categories. "Computer can prepare the complete list for honestly appointing 69,000 teachers in three hours. The UP BJP government seeking three months for the exercise leads to suspicion," Yadav said in a post on X.
